Sanyuesan Festival of Zhuang Ethnic Groups

2026-03-13 - Leave me a message

Singing folk songs, showcasing traditional costumes, drumming, dancing, and feasting at a Long Table Banquet—more and more traditional activities will take place from the third day of the third lunar month to April 19th in 2026 in Guangxi.

This period marks an important traditional festival known as “Sanyuesan” (the third day of the third lunar month), a time when people honor their ancestors, pray for good fortune, and celebrate unity among the Zhuang people. The festival’s origins can be traced back to ancient legends.

One of the most beloved legends is that of Liu Sanjie, the “singing fairy” of the Zhuang ethnic group. She praised labor and love, and exposed the sins of local rich men through songs. Unfortunately, Liu Sanjie was killed by a rich man while she was collecting firewood in the mountains. In her memory, people began gathering to sing each year.

Over time, Sanyuesan evolved into a special day for the Zhuang people to express love through song.

In addition to singing, people celebrate by preparing Five-Color Glutinous Rice dyed with plant juices, tossing embroidered balls, dancing bamboo pole dances, and playing bronze drums.

It is also a time for social gatherings—people meet friends, and some even find their crush by taking part in the festive activities.

If you’re visiting China in April, come to Guangxi and celebrate Sanyuesan!
