The Spring Festival is the most important and grand traditional festival in China, marking the saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming a hopeful spring.
On the evening of January 30th, the final day of the year in the Chinese calendar, families gather for a reunion dinner, sharing warmth and joy in each other’s company.
After dinner, it is a most popular custom that children receive lucky money in red envelopes from parents and grandparents, or other relatives.
About this custom, it is said that there is a monster named“祟”(suì) that came out on January 30th in ancient times, sneaking into people’s houses to touch children, causing them to fall ill or even suffer intellectual impairment from fright.
To protect their children, the families stay up until morning to avoid the monster “祟” from touching their children, now known as staying up on New Year’s Eve.
Later, a family gave their child copper coins in red paper. At midnight, the monster“祟” came in and wanted to scare the child,d but was frightened away by the copper coins in red paper and ran away. From then on, more and more people imitated to give their children copper coins in red paper to chase the monster“祟”.
As time goes by, though copper coins in red paper turn to lucky money in red paper, the heartfelt wishes for peace and safety remain unchanged.
